Celebrating successes with Swift’s commitment to net zero

Celebrating successes with Swift’s commitment to net zero

Company Information,
11 July 2024 | 3 min read

We’re steadfast in our commitment to sustainability and its critical role in business today. We believe that adopting sustainable practices both benefits the environment and is essential for fostering responsible business relationships with like-minded partners.

In 2021, Swift embraced the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), setting ambitious near-term and long-term targets to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in line with the goals set by the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The journey to achieving our science-based emissions targets

Near-term

A reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 54% by 2030 from a 2019 baseline, addressing direct emissions from fuels and our business operations.

Indirect impact

A 27.5% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030, which encompasses employee commuting and business travel.

Supplier engagement

Our supply chain accounts for nearly 80% of our overall company emissions, and we aim for 67% of our purchased goods/services, and capital goods to come from suppliers with science-based targets by 2027.

Net zero

By 2050, Swift aims to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 90% across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 from a 2019 baseline, with plans to offset the remaining 10% through permanent carbon removals.

What have we achieved so far?

In the last four years, we’ve reduced Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 43%. We’ve done this successfully by purchasing green electricity, installing additional solar panels, shifting towards a more hybrid-working approach, and transitioning to a fleet of electric cars.

We also exceeded our goal of ensuring that 37% of our leased vehicles were fully electric by the end of 2023. Since 2019, Scope 3 emissions from commuting and business travel have also dropped by 30%. To keep up the momentum and achieve our net-zero targets, we’re committed to continuing to emphasise sustainable choices for our business travel.

We’re committed to taking decisive and ambitious action to ensure a positive climate future and believe the private sector has a crucial role to play. As such, in partnership with our procurement teams, we’re in communication with our top suppliers to engage with them about their sustainability goals and encourage more businesses to set science-based targets.

A glimpse at our future milestones

We’re on a journey to achieving our near-term 2030 science-based targets. This year, we’re focused on crafting a detailed roadmap to achieve these targets, with continuous evolution, and innovation in sustainable practices at its core.

Our strategy includes further distancing from fossil fuels and enhancing our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria in choosing our suppliers. Nearly 2,400 companies, including Swift, have already had their 2030 science-based targets validated, and over 2,000 more have committed to setting targets in the future.

We’re proud to be a part of this global movement, and we believe that through initiatives like SBTi and others, credible corporate action towards net zero is not only vital but also possible and attainable.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF. It enables businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. The SBTi focuses on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.
